Swedish Massage

Swedish massage was developed in the 1700s by Swedish Physician Per Henrik Ling and includes six basic strokes: Effleurage (gliding/sliding), Petrissage (kneading), Friction (cross-fiber motion), Vibration, Traction, and Tapotement (percussion or tapping). The primary purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the blood’s oxygen flow, identify areas of tension within the soft tissue and assist in toxin removal from the muscles. This promotes a feeling of relaxation and wellbeing, relieving muscle tension and improving circulation and flexibility.
Effleurage comes from the French verb ‘effleurer’, to stroke, which is why it can be referred to as stroking or gliding. The massage can be varied in terms of: pressure (superficial to deep) and direction (longitudinal or transverse to the muscle fibres). Longitudinal and softer strokes are typically used to spread oil at the beginning of the massage, warm up the tissue and to make an initial assessment. These strokes tend cover a broad area with a wide palm.
There are many health benefits to receiving massage on a regular basis:

Baby Massage Classes
From the minute your baby has been placed on your tummy after birth, the feeling of love can be overwhelming, as can the panic that this baby relies solely on you to nurture it!

Touch is our babies first form of communication and an important part of their development. In the first few months our babies need to be touched and held to feel warm, safe and secure. Massaging is the most beautiful way to bond with your baby. Regularly massaging your baby has a number of physiological benefits. Most importantly it is a bonding exercise between mum and baby. When mum carries out massage, it stimulates the release of oxytocin which helps her to relax and bond with her baby. Oxytocin also promotes the let-down reflex during breastfeeding, assisting milk flow.
Baby massage encourages relaxation, stimulates the digestive system and helps to dispel wind from the baby’s body. It is especially beneficial if a baby suffers from colic, which is believed to affect around 1 in 5 babies. It increases circulation and alertness and helps to strengthen the immune system increasing the baby’s lymphatic flow helping to fight off illness.
It also helps them to learn about the different parts of their bodies and improve muscular co-ordination and flexibility. It will also help to promote longer and deeper sleep.
Your Baby must be at least 6 weeks old to attend a class and have had their 6 week check by the doctor. Classes are run over a 4-week period.

Crystal Healing
Crystal Healing is an alternative healing practice that involves the use of various crystals, such as Amethyst, Selenite, Rose, Carnelian, which interact with the energy flow of the human body to promote the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of the person. It is a form of vibrational healing helping to restore balance and encourage healing.
The practice of crystal healing originated in Ancient Egypt where they believed that different stones contain certain medicinal properties. Although it is not part of the conventional and standard medicinal theory, scientists are of the view point that the minerals, along with a specific atomic structure that comprises gemstones, do possess certain metaphysical abilities which help improve human health both physically as well as mentally.
Crystals are placed on the chakras (the Sanskrit word which means wheel) or around the body to help to remove blockages in the body’s aura. The crystals correspond to the colour associated with the chakra. The crystals can also be used to ground and energise the individual. The Chakras are known as:
The Crown (Sahasrara)
The Third Eye (Ajna)
The Throat (Visuddha)
The Heart (Anahata)
The Solar Plexus (Manipura)
The Sacral (Svadhisthana)

Aromatherapy

History
History reveals that the beginning of aromatherapy is very much linked to the development of the aromatic medicines. In the past, these aromatic medicines were associated with religion, mysticism and magic.
Aromatic plants and oils have been used for thousands of years, as incense, perfumes and cosmetics and for their medical and culinary applications. Their ritual use constituted an integral part of tradition in most early cultures, where their religious and therapeutic roles became inextricably intertwined. This type of practice is still in evidence. For example, in the East springs of juniper are burned in Tibetan temples as a form of purification. In the West, frankincense is used during the Roman Catholic mass.
Aromatherapy is a complimentary therapy using highly concentrated essential oils extracted from various parts of plants (flowers, trees, herbs or fruit) for therapeutic benefit, to enhance both physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Each oil has its own unique properties which when blended with a pure vegetable carrier oil can be massaged into the body. When the scent is inhaled, the molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and especially impact the amygdala, the emotional centre of our brain. ‘Aroma’ refers to the smell of essential oils and ‘therapy’ refers to the healing part of the treatment.
